Accessible Dance

We make dance accessible in a variety of ways. Here are some examples of services we offer.

Teach dance for the level of comfort and challenge you want.

I'm here to teach you whether you're looking for a routine you can do with ease and comfort, something to challenge you, or both. I work with your interests and golas to privide moves, technique, and routines that meet your dance goals.

Accessibility services include:

  • Wheelchair accessible premises (includes small ramp with two bumps) and teaching
  • Options of verbal, visual, and/or ASL description of moves and technique
  • Modification of moves to suit physical needs (like options for standing, seated, adjusting arm, head, or leg movement, etc.)
  • Modification of complexity to suit intellectual and attentional needs
  • Individualized feedback based on student goals
  • Low sensory environment (volume, lighting)
  • Pauses as needed
  • Options of specific routines and choreography or freestyle technique or moves
  • Options of structured, semistructured, or flexible lesson plans
  • Communication between lessons over email, text, phone call (voice), or video call

Modify dance to your physical and other needs.

Everyone can dance, whether sitting, standing, or laying down. Trust me, I’ve done all of them. I work with your strengths to choreograph and help you express yourself in ways that best suits you. This might look like showing off the coolest moves that feel good in your body or expressing the depths of your emotion. We can work around anything that doesn’t fit for your body. This helps us be creative and make a dance exactly suited to you – so you feel comfortable, confident, and happy.

Provide multimodal instruction to suit your learning style.

Everyone learns to dance differently. I honor that using a variety of techniques depending on what best suits my clients. Whether you are a visual, auditory, or tactile learner, I teach to your needs. If you like to learn over the course of several short lessons or hyper fixate during longer lessons, we can find a course length that suits you.

Supplement visual instruction with American Sign Language (ASL).

For clients who use ASL, I supplement my visual instruction using ASL. That is, like with all my classes, I demonstrate moves and break down movements to their components. Additionally, I use ASL to emphasize and explain movements and timing. I meet my clients where they’re at with noticing different song elements and help build confidence to meet their dancing goals.
